Cannabis products help Coloradans relax in a stressed-out world
May 4, 2017
Are you stressed?
That’s a silly question. We’re all stressed.
Whether we’re suffering from Front Range traffic, family tension, too much political news, not enough money, or job demands that just won’t quit, wrestling stress is part of life. Fortunately, Coloradans can take advantage of a wide range healthy remedies for stress, especially as temperatures warm and days get longer.
Evidence-based medical studies are piling up, cataloguing the science behind claims that cannabinoids can ease anxiety and depression, help those with migraines, insomnia and PTSD, and control the symptoms of serious neurological and psychological illnesses including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, bipolar disorder and Parkinson’s disease.
But for those of us with a common stress-related ailment -- I Just Can’t Even -- marijuana is an excellent natural medicine, whether smoked, vaped, applied topically, or ingested. Many of our favorite healthy stress-relieving activities can be enhanced with cannabis products available at Emerald Fields Cannaboutique in Glendale or Manitou Springs. Here are a few.
A Nice Hot Bath: Hot water dissolves all kinds of stressors — whether the water source be a visit to one of Colorado’s many mineral hot springs, a bubbling spa tub under the stars, or a relaxing soak at home. Enhance your bath in the conventional way -- with a glass of wine, mellow music and mood lighting — or add a spoonful of Dixie Bath Soak. Scented with lavender, rosemary and cedarwood, and infused with about 10 mg of THC per use, Dixie Bath Soak relieves pain and skin irritation, making it perfect after a workout or a long day on your feet.
A Lovely Cup of Tea: Camomile not doing it for you anymore? Stillwater offers three strain-specific teas, blended to combine the beneficial effects of tea and cannabis. They offer a consistent 2.5-mg dose no matter how long you steep, in tension-releasing Mellow Mint (indica/caffeine-free), calm-inducing Gentle Green (lightly caffeinated/indica) or Blissful Black (caffeinated/sativa), an Assam blend that Stillwater says will leave you “feeling refreshed, relaxed and invigorated.” For a more powerful boost, Whitewater “tea sticks” function like disposable infusers, delivering 10 mg of stress relief per cup.
Massage: Whether you prefer a rubdown from a friend or partner, or a bodywork session with a professional, massage can smooth the kinks out of your psyche as well as your muscles. Apothecanna Pain Crème contains both THC and CBD. Absorbed through the skin, neither cannabinoid will get you high, but the combination delivers relaxation, anti-inflammatory effects, and pain relief. LoDo Massage Studio offers Mile High Massages with or without cannabis-enhanced Apothecanna products, at locations in the Highlands (3450 W. 32nd Ave.) and River North (3101 Walnut St.) neighborhoods.
Workday Mood Boosters: Having a terrible day at the office? For those who can indulge safely on the job (never drive or operate dangerous equipment under the influence), discreet relief is on the way with MarQaha Mist sublingual spray. Slip a Stillwater Ripple drink enhancer (5 mg of cold-water-soluble THC, in sativa, indica or CBD) into your morning coffee or afternoon Snapple. Tinctures and edibles, like Butter Melts and cookies from Sweet Grass Kitchen, use THC and/or CBD to take your workplace agita away.
Exercise: Kick your natural endorphins into high gear with your favorite form of exercise, whether that’s running, taking a bike ride, enjoying a dance class, or walking the dog. Afterward, make a smoothie with Mary’s Medicinals Powder Drink Mixes -- Whey Protein infused with CBDa for workout recovery, or Good Greens, plant nutrients mixed with non-psychotropic THCa and CBDa for energy. For sore muscles after a workout or injury, Mary’s Medicinals also produces Topical Compound and Muscle Freeze.
Sex: Another time-honored way to relax can be made even better with cannabis. Coconut-oil-based Foria Pleasure is a “sensual enhancement” spray that unlocks all kinds of pleasant physical effects. It’s designed for women, but men enjoy it as well, according to the manufacturer. They advise applying it 15 to 30 minutes ahead of time, to let it absorb, and it’s not safe to use with latex products. It works differently for everybody, says the Foria website, so experiment to see what works for you. Testimonials on the site use words like “luxurious” and “insane.”
A Long Nap: Sometimes, on the other hand, sleeping by yourself is the way to go. Most indica strains and many hybrids will soothe your mind, relax your body and help you doze off. If you’re not planning to smoke, Stratos Sleep tablets offer a consistent single dose, 10 mg or 50 mg of indica for pain relief and a calm body high. Your comfy couch and special blanket will beckon, and you’ll awake refreshed.
