How to: Use a Dab Rig

Cannabis concentrates are now some of the most popular products on the market, but there can be some barriers to entry for customers who have not used them before. Using a dab rig, in particular, can be intimidating at first, but quickly becomes approachable after a simple introduction. Here is a quick primer on what to expect from dabbing to help get you started.

Dab rigs are commonly used to consume the wide range of cannabis concentrates available at Denver Dispensary. Different terms like shatter, budder, glass, sugar, or sauce all refer to cannabis concentrates of different consistencies and possibly different production methods. In the end, concentrates are just that, concentrated forms of cannabis that can offer increased THC or CBD potency and many other benefits.

Rigs are water pipes designed to ingest cannabis concentrates cleanly and efficiently. Like other smoking pipes, they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and price ranges. The operation of dab rigs is very similar to a standard bong or water pipe, with a few key differences. These differences include the use of a nail, or heating element, a dabber, and a carb cap.

Nails are heated using a torch or other method and then used to turn concentrates into the vapor that is inhaled. Most often made of titanium, quartz, or glass, nails are heated to the desired temperature, upwards of 500 degrees, allowed to cool, and then “dabbed” with concentrate.

A dabber is a small tool or scoop, often glass, that is used to deposit concentrate onto a nail that has been heated. A serving, or single dab, of concentrate, is typically about half the size of a grain of rice. After depositing a dab onto a heating element, a carb cap is used to cover the concentrate while it vaporizes. Carb caps are small lids or tampers that simply stop any vapor from escaping and direct it into the water filtration of the dab rig.

A brief overview of the process looks a little something like this.

  • Ready your dab rig with water and gather your concentrate and materials.
  • Heat your nail with a torch for a period of 20-30 seconds, and allow it to cool for at least as long.
  • Place your desired dose on a dabber and gather your carb cap.
  • Put your dab onto the nail, cover with the carb cap, and inhale.

These basic steps may change depending on the specifics of your dab rig and setup, but the process will remain the same. It may seem complicated at first glance, but that quickly fades away after one or two tries. Always remember that our staff at Denver Dispensary are happy to answer any questions you might have, especially if you are interested in trying new products like cannabis concentrates, which can offer many benefits over flowers. Concentrates allow for the ingestion of larger doses of THC and CBD, do not require the inhalation of burned plant material, and also offer rapid relief from symptoms.
